Short rows (partial knitting) › Knitting in sections

Sections with needle-out bridges

Open, ladder-like fabric: solid knitted columns joined by horizontal float "bridges" across empty needle gaps, plus enlarged eyelets. Strong vertical emphasis and a lacy, see-through look. Cast on with a needle-out arrangement (working groups separated by non-working needles).

The full card

What it looks like
Open, ladder-like fabric: solid knitted columns joined by horizontal float "bridges" across empty needle gaps, plus enlarged eyelets. Strong vertical emphasis and a lacy, see-through look.
How it behaves
Mostly flat. Open with some column relief.
How it works
Cast on with a needle-out arrangement (working groups separated by non-working needles). Work the section sequence; when two groups are knitted together, the yarn floats across the gap and forms bridges. Alternative: bridge 2 groups for some rows, then knit a single group alone. This opens the fabric even without a needle-out arrangement.
Machines
Single bed, hold.
Parameters
working g (5–6), gap (3–4); rows per bridge (more rows give longer, more numerous bridges); single-group rows (≈7–8).
Steps
1) A+B: R rows COR. 2) A+B+C: 1 row COL. 3) B+C: R−1 rows COR. … (the end groups always knit with a neighbour). Single-group variant: A: R COR; A+B: r COL; B: R COR; B+C: r COL; …
Charting
A needle-arrangement strip above the grid (|||||···|||||). Gaps are drawn as blank columns.
Limits and common problems
Gaps wider than about 1 inch produce float/drop risk.
Combines with
pk-mirrored-sections, stripes.
Pieces and assembly
Light, open panels; grilles, vents.
