Short rows (partial knitting) › Knitting in sections
Mirrored sections (multi-bobbin)
A symmetric chevron of leaning columns: the left half leans one way, the right half the other, meeting at a centre seam line. Looks like herringbone or feathers. Best when stretched.

Drawn for: Single bed, punch cardApproximate preview worked out from the bed chart, not a photo.Short rows change the shape of the piece. The preview shows where extra fabric builds up, not the real curve or flare.
Steps
- R half inward with yarn
- Yarn out, empty pass, L half inward with yarn
- Centre join: alternate yarn 1 on group C and yarn 2 on group D, wrapping the centre, until R rows.
- Each half outward in reverse.
- Repeat.

- What it looks like
- A symmetric chevron of leaning columns: the left half leans one way, the right half the other, meeting at a centre seam line. Looks like herringbone or feathers. Best when stretched.
- How it behaves
- Symmetric wave relief.
- How it works
- Lean depends on carriage direction, so each half needs its own yarn supply (a manual form of intarsia, no intarsia carriage). Work the right half toward the centre with yarn 1. Move the carriage empty (all needles to hold). Work the left half toward the centre with yarn 2. Join the centre groups by alternating single-group passes from each yarn, wrapping the centre needle. Then work each half back out in reverse. More bobbins give more mirror axes.
- Machines
- Single bed, hold, the ability to make empty passes. 2–4 cones. Slow (4 bobbins ≈ hours per sample).
- Parameters
- groups per half (≈3); g / gap (5/3 or 6/3); rows per group (≈8, keep them equal to simplify); number of bobbins (2–4).
- Steps
- 1) R half inward with yarn 1. 2) Yarn out, empty pass, L half inward with yarn 2. 3) Centre join: alternate yarn 1 on group C and yarn 2 on group D, wrapping the centre, until R rows. 4) Each half outward in reverse. 5) Repeat.
- Charting
- Colour per bobbin plus dark/light for multi/single rows. Group labels. Arrows.
- Limits and common problems
- Easy to lose your place. With the same colour, wrap the centre once per join; with two colours, wrap from both to keep symmetry.
- Combines with
- any sections variant.
- Pieces and assembly
- Symmetric panels with a built-in centre line.
