- What it looks like
- A pyramid or chevron of ripples stacked on each other, each narrower than the last, then widening; striped colour triangle; strong central mound.
- How it behaves
- Raised mound/peak made of ridges, pronounced.
- How it works
- First ripple full width; each subsequent ripple hold 2 needles each end (symmetric) until ~6 remain; then add back 2 per side per ripple.
- Machines
- Single bed + hold; hand take-down for narrow ripples (bulk rests on held needles).
- Parameters
- width 30; R_roll 12; divider 2; step 2 per side; min width 6; optional counter-shaping wedges in ground yarn between motifs.
- Steps
- 1) Ripple over all + lift + divider. 2) Hold 2 each side; ripple centre + lift + divider. 3) Repeat to min width. 4) Re-introduce 2 per side (rehang or bring to UWP to knit automatically). 5) Optional: knit short-row wedges on each half (hold 1 needle per pass from centre to 4 left) to absorb excess and help lie flat. 6) Single-jersey separator; repeat motif.
- Charting
- Symmetric stepped pyramid of worked cells, ripple rows shaded; wedges drawn as triangular short-row zones.
- Limits and common problems
- Excess fabric around peaks causes cupping—counter-shaping fixes it.
- Combines with
- felting (all-wool) for firmer sculpted form; repetition across width.
- Pieces and assembly
- Motif can be repeated horizontally; useful as raised button/key caps.
