- What it looks like
- Patchwork of ripple fields, each leaning a different way (from right, from left, from centre outward); faceted, quilted landscape; may not lie flat.
- How it behaves
- Multi-directional ridges, strong; sculptural.
- How it works
- Sequence of sections; each starts from a narrow group at right edge, left edge, or a centre group, and grows by asymmetric increments per side per ripple.
- Machines
- Single bed + hold; may need to break and re-join yarn to start a centre or opposite-side section.
- Parameters
- per section: start group (4–6 needles), increment left/right (1–6), ripple count (6–11), R_roll ~12, divider ~4.
- Steps
- For each section i: 1) Put carriage on start side (or re-thread in centre). 2) Hold all except start group. 3) Ripple + lift + divider. 4) Add incL/incR needles; repeat n_i ripples. Record every section's numbers.
- Charting
- Working-needle map per section (outline shapes); stripes/lifts implied by key. Mirrored (purl-side view).
- Limits and common problems
- Flatness hard to plan; accept 3D or add counter-shaping.
- Combines with
- felting post-process (softens).
- Pieces and assembly
- Good for sculptural single pieces (seat covers, cushion tops).
