Lifted stitches › Lifts

Full-row lift (horizontal tuck/roll)

Straight, parallel, full-width horizontal tubes/rolls with flat bands between; roll colour can differ from ground; rolls may vary in height along the piece. Knit R_roll rows in roll yarn, then rehang every stitch of the last ground row onto its own needle; knit divider rows in ground yarn.

Steps

  1. Knit ground, hang weights.
  2. Roll yarn: knit R_roll rows.
  3. Remove weights; rehang last ground row across all needles.
  4. Ground yarn: knit divider rows.
  5. Repeat, varying R_roll as designed.

The full card

What it looks like
Straight, parallel, full-width horizontal tubes/rolls with flat bands between; roll colour can differ from ground; rolls may vary in height along the piece.
How it behaves
Horizontal ridge/tube, strong; height ≈ half the roll's row count in stitch heights.
How it works
Knit R_roll rows in roll yarn, then rehang every stitch of the last ground row onto its own needle; knit divider rows in ground yarn.
Machines
Single bed; full-width multi-prong tools speed it up; claw weights better than a weight bar.
Parameters
R_roll = 6–30 (progress e.g. +4 per roll up to 22, then back down); divider = 2–6 rows; tension tight (e.g. 3 on fine yarn) for crisp tubes.
Steps
1) Knit ground, hang weights. 2) Roll yarn: knit R_roll rows. 3) Remove weights; rehang last ground row across all needles. 4) Ground yarn: knit divider rows. 5) Repeat, varying R_roll as designed.
Charting
Grid with roll-yarn band and an arrow at every needle (or a bracket + "lift all"). Needle diagram: every needle line receives an upward arrow.
Limits and common problems
Missing one stitch leaves a dent/drop; very tall rolls hang heavily—support by hand.
Combines with
lace holes, stripes or punch-card patterns inside the roll or divider; partial knit.
Pieces and assembly
Rolls shorten the panel considerably (each roll consumes R_roll rows of length); great for piano-key-like ribbing or edging.
