Dubied separation: draw thread and press off
Samples knitted one after another and then parted with a clean edge, with no comb marks. The comb can deform the bottom edge, so it is better to set up after a separation. It also saves starting each sample of the same width with the comb.

Carriage settings on a Dubied
Separation by draw thread
- Carriage on the right. Knit 2 rows in smooth strong yarn on the second carrier, then start the next sample: set-up, welt. Cut and pull the draw thread to separate.
Separation by press off
- 1. Carriage on the right. Knit 3 rows.
- 2. Knit 1 row. Cancel the yarn carrier.
- 3. Pass slowly 2 rows with no yarn: the rear needles lose their stitches. Pick up the carrier with good yarn and start the next sample: set-up, welt.
How to read the cross
- The four quarters are the carriage: top rear bed, bottom front bed, left moving left, right moving right.
- Corners, knit/miss cam: 1 knits; ½ knits on high butts only and misses low butts; 0 is out of work.
- Diamond, tucking cam: 0 no tuck; ½ low butts tuck, high butts knit; 1 all needles tuck. An empty diamond is all 0.
- Numbers on the line are tension dials, 0 tightest to 20 loosest. A + means looser than your usual size.
- Set-out: long tick high butt, short tick low butt, dot out of action.
Steps
- Draw thread: set the cams, carriage on the right, knit 2 rows in smooth strong yarn, start the next sample. Cut and pull the thread to separate.
- Press off: knit 3 rows on one bed, knit 1 row on both, cancel the carrier, make 2 rows slowly with no yarn. Pick up the carrier and start the next sample. Cut and pull out the slack row.
The full card
- What it looks like
- Samples knitted one after another and then parted with a clean edge, with no comb marks.
- How it behaves
- Flat.
- How it works
- The comb can deform the bottom edge, so it is better to set up after a separation. It also saves starting each sample of the same width with the comb. A draw thread is a strong smooth yarn knitted between samples. Press off drops one bed's stitches with no yarn, then a slack rib row holds the two pieces together until you pull it out.
- Machines
- Dubied. The draw thread takes the second yarn carrier. If it is not free, use press off.
- Parameters
- Draw thread 2 rows. Press off 3 rows, 1 row, then 2 empty rows, slowly.
- Steps
- 1) Draw thread: set the cams, carriage on the right, knit 2 rows in smooth strong yarn, start the next sample. Cut and pull the thread to separate. 2) Press off: knit 3 rows on one bed, knit 1 row on both, cancel the carrier, make 2 rows slowly with no yarn. Pick up the carrier and start the next sample. Cut and pull out the slack row.
- Charting
- K/M 0 1 / 1 0 for the draw thread. For press off 0 0 / 1 1, then 1 1 / 1 1, then 1 1 / 0 0.
- Limits and common problems
- The part between the comb and the draw thread, or between samples, can be waste yarn. Pull the empty rows slowly, so the needles do not snag.
- Combines with
- dubied-set-up-welt, dubied-cast-off.
- Pieces and assembly
- Several samples of one width in a row.
