Dubied basics › The machine
Dubied needles: in action, out of action, high and low butts
A needle set-out written as two lines of ticks: long ticks for high butts, short ticks for low butts, dots for needles out of action. Needles are pushed up into action from the bottom of the bed, on both sides of the machine.

Carriage settings on a Dubied
High and low butts in a set-out
- Before each sample, move the carriage gently back and forth to check every needle is in the right position.
How to read the cross
- The four quarters are the carriage: top rear bed, bottom front bed, left moving left, right moving right.
- Corners, knit/miss cam: 1 knits; ½ knits on high butts only and misses low butts; 0 is out of work.
- Diamond, tucking cam: 0 no tuck; ½ low butts tuck, high butts knit; 1 all needles tuck. An empty diamond is all 0.
- Numbers on the line are tension dials, 0 tightest to 20 loosest. A + means looser than your usual size.
- Set-out: long tick high butt, short tick low butt, dot out of action.
Steps
- Push the needles you need into action on both beds.
- Move the carriage gently back and forth to check every needle is right.
- To rearrange needles, take out the retaining bar with the hook, slide it as far as you need, and lift the needles out of their tricks.
- Put them back in sequence and slide the bar home, keeping the latches clear of it.
The full card
- What it looks like
- A needle set-out written as two lines of ticks: long ticks for high butts, short ticks for low butts, dots for needles out of action.
- How it behaves
- None by itself, but the set-out decides almost every Dubied pattern.
- How it works
- Needles are pushed up into action from the bottom of the bed, on both sides of the machine. There are two kinds, high butt and low butt, and they can be arranged in any order. The difference only shows when a raising cam (tucking or knit/miss) is at ½, because then it reaches only one kind.
- Machines
- Dubied. Keep spare needles of the right gauge.
- Parameters
- Set-out repeat from your design. A needle out of action is pushed down to the base of the bed with the end of the narrowing handle.
- Steps
- 1) Push the needles you need into action on both beds. 2) Move the carriage gently back and forth to check every needle is right. 3) To rearrange needles, take out the retaining bar with the hook, slide it as far as you need, and lift the needles out of their tricks. 4) Put them back in sequence and slide the bar home, keeping the latches clear of it.
- Charting
- Rear on top, front below, half a needle along.
- Limits and common problems
- A needle in the wrong position jams the carriage and breaks needles. The wrong gauge of needle damages the cams or the tricks. To replace a damaged needle, first take its stitch off with the narrowing handle.
- Combines with
- dubied-cam-settings, guilloche-single-bed, racked-chevron.
- Pieces and assembly
- Plan the butts before you cast on: changing them means taking needles out.
