What it looks like
A strip that folds into a row of small pyramids or diamond facets: X creases in each cell, with straight crosswise creases at the apex and at the base of each X. A single column of repeating motifs.
How it behaves
Collapses into a chain of mini pyramids along its length. Very flexible. - Each X is made of two mountain diagonals steeper than 45°, so they count as vertical folds and go on the front bed. - The full-width horizontal folds at the apex and base are valleys, so they also go on the front bed. - Every fold is therefore on the front bed, even though the strip has both mountains and valleys. - It is the clearest demonstration of the bed/angle rule.
Machines
Needs a double bed. All the moving happens on one bed, which simplifies tracking.
Parameters
W (cast-on width; sets the size of each pyramid), cell height Hc set by W, the rate and the angle, k for the horizontals. 1. Cast on W in DJ. 2. Start two fold bands at the outer edges and move them inward until they cross at the centre, then outward again (X). 3. At the X's base and apex rows, work a full-width horizontal fold on the front bed. 4. Repeat for the length.
Charting
All red: two crossing diagonals forming X shapes plus full-width red bands at the cell boundaries.
Limits and common problems
Start with a small width. Crossing points need careful transfers.
Combines with
waterbomb-tessellation.
Pieces and assembly
A single strip. Can be trim, a strap, or a coiled object.
