Stripes and woven-in yarn › Stripes
Stripes, colour sequences and colour-as-relief
Horizontal bands. In rib or tubular work the bands differ on each face. Combined with partial knit, ottoman or ripples, the colour stripes make raised colour ridges or wedges. The colour changes between passes. Even counts keep the change on one side (the changer side on Brother DBJ, the left).

Steps
- Plan the sequence in pass pairs.
- Change at the same side.
- Carry the yarn up the edge if the gap is ≤4–6 rows, otherwise cut.

- What it looks like
- Horizontal bands. In rib or tubular work the bands differ on each face. Combined with partial knit, ottoman or ripples, the colour stripes make raised colour ridges or wedges.
- How it behaves
- Flat (stocking) or relief (with ripples/ottoman, ch2).
- How it works
- The colour changes between passes. Even counts keep the change on one side (the changer side on Brother DBJ, the left). Odd counts need the yarn carried or cut. On a Dubied the carrier is changed by a lever and NF2/NHF2 (2 carriers) or N4/NHF4 (4 carriers) set the number of colours. Dubied ripples (front bed knits extra rows) in a contrast colour give colour relief.
- Machines
- All. Single-bed Brother single colour changer (KHC) for 4-colour stripes [unverified for KH-821 compatibility]; ribber colour changer for double bed.
- Parameters
- stripe heights in pass pairs (2, 4, 6 …); colours 2–4 (changer) or unlimited (cut and rejoin).
- Steps
- 1) Plan the sequence in pass pairs. 2) Change at the same side. 3) Carry the yarn up the edge if the gap is ≤4–6 rows, otherwise cut.
- Charting
- Row colour sequence column (one colour key per pass pair); relief rows flagged with the ch2 ottoman glyph.
- Limits and common problems
- Tight carried edges. In rib, purl bumps blur the stripe edges (two-colour "dots" at the change row).
