Rib › Rib with single-bed areas

Rib with single-jersey panels / broken rib relief

Rib ground interrupted by rectangles or narrow columns of smooth jersey that bulge out like pillows or tabs; columns of 4 front stitches inside a 6×6 rib can create a hide-and-reveal flap; "broken rib" shows purl patches erupting into knit columns. Plating gives colour-coded panels.

What it looks like
Rib ground interrupted by rectangles or narrow columns of smooth jersey that bulge out like pillows or tabs; columns of 4 front stitches inside a 6×6 rib can create a hide-and-reveal flap; "broken rib" shows purl patches erupting into knit columns. Plating gives colour-coded panels.
How it behaves
bubble/relief; puffs outward where jersey sits because the surrounding rib contracts.
How it works
Bed map mostly rib; selected zones hold all stitches on one bed (jersey) for a set height, then return to rib; or back-bed patches inside a front rib column.
Machines
Double bed; transfers only at zone boundaries.
Parameters
base rib (6×6 or finer), panel width/height, panel positions (staggered), chart scale.
Steps
1) Establish base rib. 2) At panel start row transfer the zone's stitches to one bed. 3) Knit panel height. 4) Transfer back to rib. 5) Repeat per chart.
Charting
Grid with explicit scale legend (1 st×1 row, 2 st×2 rows, or 1 st×2 rows): long grey columns of different start/stop heights on white.
Limits and common problems
Panels too small → no puff.
Combines with
lace-in-jersey, cable-in-jersey.
Pieces and assembly
Bubbles reduce flat area; allow extra length/width.
